Music of Great German Composers

Few countries can rival Germany's rich musical heritage. Germany’s prize composers and musicians have withstood generations of criticism and praise, including Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn, George Friedrich Handel, Johannes Brahms and Richard Wagner.

These classical music greats were born and spent much of their lives in Germany as well. Opportunities to walk in their footsteps are everywhere. In Leipzig see where Bach worked as an organist, conductor, composer and teacher. In addition, you can visit the St. Thomas and St. Nicolai Churches, where he performed most of his oratorios for the first time. Leipzig also hosted the first performance of Bach´s “lost” St. Matthew Passion, conducted by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. And in Halle, Händel was born and worked as an organist.

In honor of these brilliant composers, Encore has designed a new Germany itinerary following their lives and careers that can be customized to your ensemble’s needs. Let these great lives inspire your performances.

This base itinerary starts with three fully promoted concerts at the Protestant Church Holleben E, Protestant Church Köppern, and a Mass at the Wieskirche—along with tours of the Bach and Händel museums. You also visit the original setting for Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser at Wartburg Castle, tour Bach’s birthplace, explore St. Thomas’ church where Bach served as choirmaster for 27 years, and more.
