Join WMPA Traveling Friends and Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Music Director Ulysses James as we celebrate his 38-year tenure while touring the musical, cultural and culinary highlights of northern Italy and Slovenia. This musical journey combines much loved cities and lesser known gems, with cultural and musical elements woven in, many of which are unique to this program and offer a privileged 'behind the scenes' experience.
Experience Milan with special access to La Scala workshop and a VIP welcome backstage prior to the performance. Enjoy the beauty of Lake Como and the gardens of Villa Melzi overlooking the waters off Bellagio. Visit the Swiss town of Lugano, savor the regional specialties of Lombardy, listen to a virtuoso perform on an original Stradivarius in Cremona and take in musical history at the birthplace of Ambrosian chant in Milan. Brian O'Donovan Presents...A Celtic Adventure | Dates: September 26 - October 5, 2023
In collaboration with Brian O'Donovan, host of "A Celtic Sojourn Radio" on Boston's GBH Public Radio, we are delighted to present "Celtic Adventure", an extraordinary journey through Ireland. While Brian will not be traveling with us, he has played a pivotal role in meticulously designing the itinerary, hand-picking the local musicians, and selecting the local musical guide. Additionally, he will be hosting pre-departure and post-trip receptions in Boston, adding a personal touch to the overall experience.
This program offers an exceptional blend of the finest local cuisine, captivating music, and immersive cultural encounters. You can expect an array of unique musical events, privileged access to cherished destinations, and an array of thrilling surprises throughout the trip. In collaboration with Diane Linn, Executive Director of the Community Chorus of Detroit, we are delighted to offer "Benvenuti in Italia", a unique musical journey featuring a wide variety of incredible musical, cultral, and culinary experiences -- many of which offer privileged "behind the scenes" access.
The program features a rich array of Italian culture and music, luxury hotels, excellent regional food and wine and so much more. Some of the musical highlights include a private tour of La Scala Opera House, a private private tour and recital at the Museo dei Violini, and tickets to an opening night performance of Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro."

Cradles of Romantic Piano Music | Dates: October 7-16, 2023
In collaboration with Anastasia Seifetdinova, a renowned pianist and faculty member at The Hartt School (University of Hartford), we are delighted to offer "Cradles of Romantic Piano Music," a glorious trip through Germany and the Czech Republic.
The program features a rich array of German culture and music, luxury hotels, and excellent regional food and wine. Musical highlights include a a visit to Thomaskirche (where Johann Sebastian Bach directed music for over two decades), a visit to the Mendelssohn House for a tour and private concert, a behind the scenes tour of the Bluthner piano factory (including a recital by Anastasia showcasing the instruments amazing sound), a guided tour of Semperoper, a visit to the Czech Museum of Music, and a unique farewell performance by Anastasia. There are also many sumptuous culinary highlights including a welcome dinner at Lutter and Wegner am Gendarmenmarkt, dinner at Restaurant Daniel in Dresden, a private piano salon before dinner at Alte Meister, and many other delicious treats.
