Music Festival Highlight – Aspen Music Festival

Showcasing the best in classical music, the Aspen Music Festival and School is one of the most prestigious classical musical festivals in the country. Nestled in the mountains of Aspen, Colorado, this esteemed event presents musicians and classical music lovers the opportunity to experience performances by many renowned artists, conductors and promising musicians. This year marks the 65^th anniversary of the Aspen Music Festival and School happening June 26 August 17 presenting almost 300 events and educational platforms.

About the Aspen Music Festival

Since 1949, the Aspen Music Festival and School opened doors as a music education epicenter featuring a festival for up-and-coming musicians and conductors. Bucksbaum Campus serves as the primary home for the school offering many programs of studies including chamber music, piano, instrumental, advanced quartet, contemporary ensemble, brass quintet, conducting, composition, orchestra, opera and classical guitar. The 2014 music director is Robert Spano, an accomplished conductor who oversees the Aspen Music School’s more than 630 students.

Aspen Music Festival Lineup 2014

Referred to as “The New Romantics,” the 2014 Season finds inspiration in the resurgence of Romanticism from Tchaikovsky to Ades. Highlights of the forthcoming 2014 lineup includes performances of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Liebermann’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, Adam’s Short Ride in a Fast Machine, Glass’ The American Four Seasons, Thomas’ Legend of the Phoenix and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. Performances of standard orchestra favorites are on the schedule as well as a celebration of the 150^th anniversary of Richard Strauss. The list of impressive guest artists includes luminaries such as violinist Midori, cellist Lynn Harrell, the American String Quartet and conductor Hannu Lintu.

Aspen Music Festival Venues

The Aspen Music Festival offers three major performance locations for the 2014 season; the Benedict Music Tent, Joan and Irving Harris Concert Hall and Wheeler Opera House. The Benedict Music Tent is the largest of the three venues featuring an open air tent structure and seating for 2,050. Located nearby is the Harris Concert Hall providing concert goers an excellent acoustic experience and seating for 500. The historic Wheeler Opera House delivers elegant decor in a vintage days-gone-by setting and seats 450 guests.

Family friendly venues include the David Karetsky Music Lawn and the Kaye Music Garden, both located in close proximity to the Benedict Music Tent. Small community venues include the Aspen Chapel and Aspen Community Church. The Bucksbaum Campus provides a variety of practice rooms, teaching studios and rehearsal halls for musicians and festival programs.
