The spirit of Flamenco can be found in art, music, sport, literature, and all areas of public life. At the heart of its power is a mysterious force known as “Duende.” This force has been most eloquently described not by a musician or choreographer, but by Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca, who described Duende as the “mysterious power which everyone senses and no philosopher explains’ is, in sum, the spirit of the earth.” Using Flamenco Nuevo, and also referencing classical poets and contemporary artists, Encore Tour Manager Sonia Beck discusses the history and essential elements of Flamenco, before examining how Duende can be felt in other art forms around the world.
