Welcome back to our Venue Spotlight series, where we look at the performance spaces that make an Encore tour unforgettable. This time we’re in Vienna, at St. Stephen’s Cathedral: the Gothic landmark locals call Stephansdom, and one of the most requested venues on our Austria tours. Eight Centuries at the Heart of Vienna St. Stephen’s has stood at the center of Vienna since the 12th century, and the Gothic cathedral visitors see today took shape after Duke Rudolph IV laid its foundation stone in 1359. Its south tower rises 136 meters, making it the tallest church in Austria, and its roof of colored tiles, patterned with the imperial double-headed eagle and Vienna’s coat of arms, is one of the most recognizable sights in Europe. The north tower holds the Pummerin, one of the largest free-swinging church bells on the continent. A Cathedral Woven Into Music History Few venues anywhere carry this much musical history. Joseph Haydn sang in the cathedral’s boys’ choir as a child. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart married Constanze Weber here in 1782, was named assistant music director of the cathedral in the last year of his life, and received his funeral blessing in the cathedral’s Crucifix Chapel in 1791. For student musicians, performing in the same space connects the music they rehearse at home to the place it came from. Mozart’s 1782 marriage record, kept in the St. Stephen’s Cathedral archive That tradition is still very much alive. In 2020, the cathedral completed the rebuild of its Riesenorgel, a Rieger organ in the west gallery with 130 stops and more than 8,500 pipes, and its music program fills the nave with masses, concerts, and organ recitals throughout the year. What It’s Like to Perform at St. Stephen’s Expect a big, resonant acoustic. Sound carries a long way in the tall Gothic nave, which rewards sustained choral writing, sacred repertoire, and music with room to breathe. Many directors plan slightly broader tempos and crisp diction so the text doesn’t blur in the reverberation. Our Repertoire Library is a good place to start building a program that suits the space. The cathedral sits on Stephansplatz in the middle of Vienna’s Old Town, so concerts attract locals and visitors alike. This past summer, the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra performed at St. Stephen’s, and more than 800 tickets were distributed for the concert. The cathedral is a natural fit for choirs, but orchestras and other instrumental ensembles perform here too. Because St. Stephen’s is an active church, concerts are scheduled around services, and programs are typically reviewed in advance to make sure they suit a sacred space. Your Encore team handles that coordination and helps you plan rehearsal time in the venue. Building a Tour Around St. Stephen’s A concert at St. Stephen’s fits naturally into an Austria tour. Itineraries such as Insider’s Guide to Austria, Mozart and the Sound of Music, and Across the Austrian Empire all include time in Vienna and can be built around a performance here. Pair it with another standout Austrian venue like Melk Abbey, or add Vienna to a Central European route through Budapest, Bratislava, and Prague. Between rehearsals, climb the 343 steps of the south tower for a view over the city, tour the catacombs beneath the cathedral, and explore the Hofburg Palace and Schönbrunn. An evening at the Vienna State Opera or the Musikverein makes a fitting finale for a music-focused trip.
