As the heat of the day gave way to a beautiful Tuscan evening, the standing-room only crowd started filing into the Terme Tettuccio in Montecatini. Known for the healing powers of its waters, the thermal baths in this picturesque resort town between Florence and Lucca provided a spectacular setting for a memorable concert. As the first notes of the Overture to Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro echoed through the marble columns, it was obvious this was going to be a magical evening. This was just one of the many highlights for the outstanding Los Angeles Youth Orchestra on its customized 11-day tour through Italy. The ensemble, made up of some of the finest young musicians in Southern California, ventured from Venice to Rome while performing 3 concerts to large, enthusiastic crowds. Beginning with two nights in Venice, the group made a stop in Verona to explore the fabled city of Romeo and Juliet before arriving in Cremona where they performed in the lovely auditorium at the Violin Museum there. From Cremona it was on to Montecatini where they enjoyed a ride in the funicular to Montecatini Alto and some amazing views of the hills of Tuscany. While in Tuscany the musicians enjoyed trips to Florence, Lucca and Siena as well as a wonderful day at the beach in Viareggio. The tour finished with three nights in Rome and another overflow packed house at Sant’Agnese in Agone Church in Piazza Navona.
