Dear Friends,

It is my great pleasure to invite you to join us for A Capital Overture: Kedrick at the Kennedy Center—a journey to support and celebrate Maestro Kedrick Armstrong’s debut conducting the Washington National Opera in the world premiere of a new production of Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha. This extraordinary moment marks both a personal triumph for our beloved conductor and a historic reimagining of one of America’s most significant operatic works.

Our time in Washington will also include the opportunity to experience the National Symphony Orchestra performing the world premiere of a new Double Concerto by our friend and Kennedy Center Composer-in-Residence Carlos Simon, featuring violinist Hilary Hahn and cellist Seth Parker Woods. This adds yet another layer of meaning to our visit—celebrating a new generation of composers whose work continues to expand and redefine the American musical story.

At a time when the arts—and particularly artists of color—face renewed challenges and erasures across our nation, showing up for this moment is itself an act of resistance. By gathering together in Washington, D.C. to uplift Treemonisha and the diverse voices who bring it to life, we affirm that the arts remain one of the most powerful expressions of our shared humanity and one of the most vital forces for justice, empathy, and connection.

Our visit offers more than a concert experience. It is an opportunity to witness a rising artistic leader take the national stage while exploring the cultural and historical heart of our country—from the Smithsonian museums to the monuments that tell our collective story. Along the way, we’ll connect with fellow music lovers and patrons of the arts who share in our pride and commitment to shaping a more inclusive cultural future.

I hope you will join us for this special Encore Experience, where every moment has been thoughtfully designed to inspire, connect, and celebrate the next generation of musicians and creative visionaries. I look forward to sharing this unforgettable occasion with you.

With warm regards,
Dr. Mieko Hatano
